Welcome.
My name is Karen Atkinson. I've been providing friendly, reliable and thorough editorial services to regular and new clients since 2009. I work with academics, businesses, and authors of fiction and non-fiction books from around the world.
I'm fortunate to work with writers from the UK, the Netherlands, Egypt, Bulgaria, Mozambique, Australia, Russia, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Chile. I love working with such an interesting mix of people and their diverse writing styles and projects.
I think that good editing fully preserves the author's voice and message while providing clarity and consistency. This requires communication and trust between author and editor, and I very much enjoy creating strong editorial relationships. |
I'm an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. This is the highest grade of membership, and it shows that I've demonstrated my training, skills and experience to my industry's professional body and that I follow its Code of Practice.
I regularly undertake training to hone and update my editorial skills. My client testimonials can be found here.
I have an ongoing part-time academic research role, and I hold a PhD in law, an MSc in social & community research, and a first degree in law. Further details of my background can be found here.

I'm lucky to live and work in Keswick, a busy market town on the shores of Derwentwater in the beautiful English Lake District. The photo at the top of the page was taken from my office window during a particularly lovely sunset.
I have an editorial assistant named Otto. He is in charge of fresh air breaks, work/life balance, and losing tennis balls. Otto is pictured here on our early morning commute, which takes us over the fells, along the lake shore, and back home to the office. |
When I'm not working, I'm usually walking in the hills, swimming in the lake or reading - I usually have some fiction, some non-fiction and some poetry on the go. Here's a link to my Goodreads bookshelf. I'm always happy to receive suggestions for new titles to add to my reading list. |
I also enjoy leaving books in random places for people to find, read, and hopefully pass on to someone else. You can find out more at www.bookcrossing.com.
