Background
I live and work at the edge of the beautiful English Lake District. When I'm not working, I'm usually walking in the hills, swimming in the lakes or reading - I usually have some fiction, some non-fiction and some poetry on the go.
I have an editorial assistant named Otto. He is in charge of fresh air breaks, snacks, work/life balance, and losing tennis balls.
Otto is pictured here on one of our early morning commutes. It takes us over the fells, along the lake shore, and home to the office.
CV
2009-present: |
Karen Atkinson Editorial has developed steadily over nearly fifteen years. In addition to working with my regular customers, I enjoy a steady stream of new projects from around the world. I also combined my business with a part-time research role between 2011 and 2022. As an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), I have demonstrated my editorial competence, experience and training. I continue to engage in regular editorial training and skill development. |
2007-2009: |
Following completion of my PhD, I worked as a full-time lecturer and Director of the Charity Law Unit at the University of Liverpool. In 2009, I decided that full-time lecturing was not for me. I took on a part-time research role, started training as a freelance editor, and moved somewhere beautiful. My editing work quickly expanded. |
2004-2007: |
My PhD thesis, snappily titled Charities and Collaborative Campaigning: Law, Regulation and Practice, was completed, examined, and awarded (with no corrections) in 2007. While completing my doctoral studies, I worked part-time as a study skills adviser. This involved proofreading a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate work and assisting hundreds of students to improve their research skills, their academic style and structure, and their written English. |
2001-2004: |
After gaining a 2:1 in my LLB (Hons) degree, I worked as a researcher at the University of Liverpool's Charity Law Unit, gaining my first experience of jointly authoring a book chapter, editing and proofreading a published book, and writing a series of magazine and journal articles. During this time, I obtained a distinction (and the highest grade of my cohort) in my MSc in Applied Social & Community Research. I also decided to study for a doctorate and obtained funding to do so. |
