Services

I provide copyediting and proofreading services to independent fiction and non-fiction authors.
I also provide proof-editing services to organisations and individuals.

If you are unsure of the differences between these services and which you might need, please read on.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last check that takes place when your manuscript has been developed, edited and typeset and is in its final form, ready for publication.
Proofreading is an important and distinct stage in the publishing process.
During proofreading, I will focus on areas such as:
  • making final corrections to spelling, grammar, punctuation, and the use of capitals and italics.
  • ensuring page elements are placed correctly and that style decisions have been consistently applied.
  • checking line spacing, heading styles, font size, broken font, general appearance and layout.
  • checking any lists, tables, figures, illustrations, citations and references.
  • checking sections that need to be added at a late stage of the process.
Who uses my proofreading service?

- Independent fiction authors.
- Independent non-fiction authors.

Copyediting

Copyediting is most useful when you have a completed manuscript but before you have spent money and time putting it into its final format for publication.
During a basic copyedit, I will focus on areas such as:
  • correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation and the use of capitals and italics.
  • addressing repetition, awkward phrasing and inaccurate use of language.
  • restructuring over-long sentences and paragraphs that are hard to follow.
  • ensuring accuracy and consistency in basic layout.
  • highlighting basic factual inaccuracies and minor structural issues.
  • checking any lists, tables, figures, illustrations, citations and references.
  • coding headings and other items for the typesetter (if requested).
Who uses my copyediting service?

- Independent fiction authors.
- Independent non-fiction authors.
- Academic authors.

Proof-editing

Proof-editing is a combined service that is useful for written content that is not intended for formatting and publication in book format.
Many businesses, charities and associations produce written content such as plans and reports, marketing and promotional materials, website text, blog posts, newsletters, educational materials and CPD materials. My typical (and often regular) users of this service have knowledge and expertise in their areas of work, but they find that having their work professionally edited and proofread really makes a difference to how it appears when it reaches its intended audience.
Who uses my proof-editing service?

- Businesses.
- Charities.
- Professional associations.
-  Individuals.
- Anyone who publishes online content.

For more detailed information on the differences between copyediting and proofreading,
please see this useful factsheet from the CIEP.
